Seafarers Worldwide live stream Telepresence Able Seaman Course is an instructor led USCG approved online distance learning course. The complete course including final written examination and knot practical is accomplished online.
Students can attend the course that is been held in the classroom online from a laptop, wherever they are based. This course is geared towards motivated learners who will attend the course along with in-class students with the support and encouragement of the instructor and other classmates.
The examination system permitting students to take the final at home is designed to confirm the identity of the person taking the test and maintain the integrity of the examination and the examination process through a combination of remote proctoring and proprietary artificial intelligence (AI).
The goal of this 40-hour telepresence course, “Able Seaman”, is to provide trainees with knowledge, understanding and proficiency in duties and responsibilities of the Able Seaman.
This course is meant to satisfy the written examination requirements of 46 CFR 12.05-9 for the “Deck & Navigation General / Deck Safety” and “Deck General & Safety / Rules of the Road” exam modules for any Able Seaman endorsement; and the practical (knot tying) examination requirements of 46 CFR 12.05-9 for any Able Seaman endorsement.
Mariners who pass their Seafarer’s Worldwide AB exams will be presented with a certificate of course completion for their Able Seaman (Domestic), which can be presented to the USCG National Maritime Center upon application for a merchant mariner credential.
There are six AB ratings. Each is a different level. The higher the level, the more vessels the AB is qualified to work on. To explain, AB levels are based on the mariner’s sea time only. Therefore, advancement to a higher-level AB is base of sea time alone.
The highest level is AB Unlimited. This AB requires 1080-days of sea time, on oceans. And additionally can work on any type of size vessel.
AB Limited is one level lower. This AB requires 540-days of sea time, on oceans. And can work on any type of vessel less than 1600 GRT.
One level lower is AB Special. This AB requires 360-days sea time on ocean, or navigable inland waters. Additionally, this AB can work on any type of vessel less than 500 GRT. To clarify, this AB is good for any towing vessel.
AB Fishing, AB Offshore Supply Vessel (OSV), and AB Sail are the lowest AB level. Each requiring only 180-days of sea time. And additionally, limited to one type of vessel.
