Delegates will also:
Be able to handle a survival craft and take charge after abandoning the ship; know how to use the equipment on board, including communication- and monitoring equipment as well as pyrotechnics; know how to provide first aid and take actions to survive with the crew members.
OBJECTIVES
On completion of the training, the trainees will have knowledge of the construction and function of different types of survival craft, rescue boats and associated equipment and be able to:
Take charge of survival craft or a rescue boat during and after launch and upon recovery
Manage survivors and survival craft after abandoning ship
Manage injured persons,
Be able to operate a survival craft engine
Know the correct use of all locating devices, including communication and signaling apparatus and pyrotechnics, how to apply first aid to survivors and the actions to take to preserve the lives of those in their charge.

Everyone who is responsible for survival crafts and rescue boats, other than Fast Rescue Boats, in emergency situations

ENTRY STANDARDS
For the issue of a certificate, candidates must: be in the possession of a valid medical certificate and have the minimum age of 18
Trainees must have received approved training on Personal Survival Techniques or Basic Sea Survival; meet the standard of competence in Section AVI/2-1 of the STCW Code; and successfully complete approved training as described in this document and have approved sea-going service of not less than 6 months
STAFF REQUIREMENT
Trainer
Training and instruction will be handled by a duly licensed marine deck officer at the operational level who is a subject matter expert of the course program. The instructor is a holder of training certificate in Training Course for Instructors compliant with the STCW standard (IMO MC 6.09).
REQUIRED ATTENDANCE
100% attendance is required for successful completion of the course.
CERTIFICATION
A certificate of successful completion shall be issued to those participants who successfully complete the course and meet the assessment criteria.
FACILITIES AND EQUIPMENT
Facilities and equipment used for training are of a type approved under the SOLAS Convention and suitable for the practical demonstrations and exercises to be undertaken in accordance with the specific objectives of the training.
In addition delegates will have access to appropriate facilities, including:
A set of gravity davits of a type commonly fitted in modern merchant vessels housing an enclosed lifeboat , sited so as to allow launching into the water, an enclosed motorized lifeboat with on-load release mechanism, an open lifeboat propelled by oars, a rescue boat with appropriate launching facility, an area of open water where practical exercises in the launching, handling and recovery of survival craft and rescue boats can be undertaken.
FITNESS
Participants should be aware that activities in this course are physical in nature. Much of the course is conducted in the lifeboat underway.
REGISTRATION and CLASS SCHEDULE
Participants are requested to present themselves at the student administration first day of training for registration and medical screening unless otherwise informed.
DRESS CODE
Participants are required to wear appropriate attire for training. Sleeveless shirts and open toed shoes are considered inappropriate. Coveralls will be supplied in three sizes:
PPE will be provided for all students:
- Hardhats
- Type I PFDs
- Gloves
- Type III PFDs
- ASSESSMENTS
Assessments will be undertaken by persons qualified in accordance with the provisions of Section A I/6 of the STCW Code.
Active participation in practical training is essential. It also enables candidates’ ability, as required by Table A-VI/2-1 of the STCW Code, to be demonstrated and assessed. The training will be organized so that each candidate, as a minimum: acts as the person in charge takes part in the practical operation of launching and boarding survival craft, clearing the ship (or dock side) quickly, handling whilst afloat and disembarkation from and recovery of the survival craft.
