Who Should Attend

This course is required for mariners assigned responsibility for taking command of a survival craft during shipboard emergencies.

  • Deck Officers
  • Able Seafarers / Able Seamen
  • Designated Lifeboat Commanders
  • Crew assigned emergency and abandonment-station duties on SOLAS vessels

Training Content

  • Survival craft regulations and emergency preparedness
  • Shipboard emergencies and abandon-ship procedures
  • Personal lifesaving appliances and survival equipment
  • Motor-propelled enclosed lifeboats
  • Lifeboat construction, equipment, and onboard systems
  • Lifeboat engines, steering, and propulsion
  • Launching appliances and davit systems
  • Actions to take immediately after launching
  • Survival organization and leadership responsibilities
  • Care of survivors and post-abandonment first aid
  • Distress signals and survival communications

Learning Outcomes

  • Take command of a survival craft during emergency situations
  • Safely prepare, launch, and operate a motor enclosed lifeboat
  • Organize and manage survivors following abandonment
  • Apply leadership and decision-making skills in survival scenarios
  • Provide first aid and maintain survivability while awaiting rescue
