Course Details

Successfully passing the written examination and practical assessments qualifies graduates for certification as Operator of Fast Rescue Boats. Certification meets U.S. Coast Guard requirements under STCW Code Table A-VI/2-2 and 46 CFR 12.617(b). Certificates are valid for five years.

Admission & Entry Requirements

There are no formal prerequisites to attend. However, to receive the STCW U.S. Coast Guard approved certificate, participants must:

    • Hold a Certificate of Proficiency in Survival Craft and Rescue Boats, or
    • Hold a Certificate of Proficiency in Survival Craft, or
    • Hold a Lifeboatman Certificate
    • Be 18 years of age or older
    • Be medically fit to perform the practical exercises

Participants will be required to sign a medical declaration upon registration. Class enrollment ranges from 6 to 18 students depending on the season. The typical instructor-to-student ratio for rescue boat handling is 6:1.

Attendance & Schedule

Students must attend 100% of the program. This requirement is strictly enforced regardless of whether an absence is excused or unexcused.

    • Monday – Wednesday
    • 0800 – 1700 daily
    • Lunch: 1200 – 1300
    • Additional instructional time may be added if required

Grading & Assessment

Written Examination

A final written examination is administered on the final day of class.
A minimum passing score of 70% is required.

Practical Assessments

Practical evaluations follow the competency requirements outlined in
STCW Regulation VI/2, Paragraph 1.A. Students will practice required skills
before completing pass/fail assessments.

Student Responsibilities

Students are expected to maintain professional standards of conduct throughout the course.

    • Personal protective equipment (including lifejackets) will be provided
    • Bring warm clothing suitable for underway operations
    • A change of clothes is recommended
