This course is the Combined Able Seaman & Proficiency in Survival Craft Limited Course that will span the course of Severn (7)days.
About The Able Seaman Course:
The Able Seaman (AB) course is the starting point for all higher level certificates. This Marine Training AB course meets all of the U. S. About The PSC, Ltd Course:
PSC stands for Proficiency in Survival Craft.
This two and one half (2.5) day course provides the knowledge, understanding, and proficiency required to take charge of a survival craft or rescue boat during and after launching as outlined in the STCW code.
This course is designed for inland mariners and focuses on the survival craft found onboard inland and near-coastal vessels. Perfect for Washington State Ferry Crew members, or for vessels without lifeboats.
This course satisfies the following STCW95 and CFR requirements:
• FR Title 46 Subpart 160.035 Lifeboats for Merchant Vessels
• CFR: Title 46 Subpart 160.056 Rescue Boats
• CFR: Title 46 Subpart 160.151 SOLAS Life rafts
• CFR: Title 46 Subpart 28.270 Instruction, Drills & Safety
At this training you will learn about Safety Guide Lines, Ship Emergencies, Abandoning the Ship, Personal Lifesaving Appliances, Rescue Operation’s, Life Rafts & Life Raft Launching Devices / Appliances, Location Aids, Signals and Signs in an Emergency.
This STCW course has been developed for seafarers who are responsible for the survival crafts and rescue boats during an emergency situation.
By following this training, participants should be able to be in charge of the survival craft or rescue boat during and after launching. Besides this, the delegates will learn how to deal with the crew members and the rescue boat, and provide first aid after abandoning the ship.
About Your Instructor:
Captain Patrick Boyle is no stranger to maritime education having spent nine years as the principle seamanship teacher at Seattle Maritime Academy where he acquired a high level of expertise in survival craft training. He has been active in the field of maritime training and education development for fifteen years focusing on teaching certification courses that enable mariners to enter the maritime industry or advance their careers.
He has conducted programs for institutions such as the Emirates Technical Safety and Development Center in the UAE, the British Columbia Institute of Technology, Pacific Maritime Institute in Seattle, and a survival craft program certified by the Dutch Inspectorate of Holland.
Patrick currently serves as program administrator for Northwest Maritime Academy, and is working as a trainer, program coordinator for maritime disaster preparedness and other training programs conducted in the United States and abroad.
He is a Co-Founder of Seafarers Worldwide, and in addition to his role at NWMA; leads a team providing all aspects of training and certification for foreign mariners of all types including oil and gas, cruise industry, and those who work aboard commercial vessels.
A licensed Ocean Master; Patrick holds a communications degree from Eastern Washington University, and furthered this expertise at Cap Sante International while working alongside survival craft technicians servicing and training crew aboard all types of vessels at home and abroad

Why You Should Take The PSC, Ltd and Able Seaman Combined Course
Although experience at sea remains an important part of becoming an Able Body Seaman, it is no longer enough to just “serve your time”. As per the United States Coast Guard regulations, an individual must undergo several tests and demonstrate their proficiency in launching and taking command of a survival craft.
Ordinary seaman who are upgrading to AB and wishing to use their sea time to demonstrate their Proficiency as a Lifeboatman may find it difficult while employed in the tugboat or Ferry industry where lifeboats are sparse. To help mariners with this challenge NWMA constructed a purpose build full scale lifeboat davit at Terminal 91. Certification courses are held monthly.

The first forty (40) hours of this course review the core topics of what it is to be an Able Body Seaman and includes assessments on:

The next 20 hours of the AB program is a focus on Proficiency in Survival Craft Limited. Think about it, it’s cold, its wet the weather is deteriorating and your only means of support is slipping away under your feet. The order has been given to abandon ship and the water does not look inviting.
The emphasis of this course is on survival and recognizes that when things go badly wrong on board ship, launching a life raft is the last resort. So it is essential that the crew should know what sort of life rafts they have on board, how to launch them, how to board them in an emergency, and how to help others who may be injured, exhausted or unconscious.
Why do we recommend Proficiency in Survival Craft Limited over a Lifeboat course? It’s mostly about time and money, this course is half the time and half the cost. But natural career progression is part of it too, why take a course that is focused entirely on Motor enclosed lifeboats if you work on a ship that only carries life rafts? We believe it is more beneficial for the mariner to learn all there is to know about life rafts first. When the mariner’s career progresses to a ship that carries lifeboats then it is time to take a course.
