Launch your maritime career with the Able Seaman endorsement. This five-day course prepares mariners to safely and effectively serve as part of the deck department in compliance with U.S. Coast Guard and STCW requirements.

The Able Seaman (AB) endorsement is the first major credential toward professional advancement at sea. This course provides the knowledge and practical skills necessary to safely perform deck operations, comply with Coast Guard safety regulations, and protect the marine environment.

Course Details

Certification & Endorsements

With an AB certificate from Seafarers Worldwide and the required sea time, you may apply for the following endorsements without further testing:

  • AB Unlimited: 540 days ocean service. May serve as AB on any vessel.
  • AB Limited: 360 days on vessels over 100 GRT on ocean waters.
    May serve as AB on vessels under 1,600 tons and constitute 50% of AB crew on vessels over 1,600 tons.
  • AB Special: 180 days service.
    May serve as AB on vessels under 500 tons and constitute 50% of AB crew on vessels over 500 tons.

Regulatory Compliance

This course satisfies the training requirements of STCW Code Section A-II/5, Table A-II/5, and the competency requirements of 46 CFR 12.603(a)(4).

It also fulfills the written examination requirements of 46 CFR 12.405(a) for Deck General and Navigational General, Deck Safety and Rules of the Road, and the Practical Marlinspike Seamanship Demonstration under 46 CFR 12.405(c).

Certification is recognized by the United States Coast Guard,
Transport Canada, and other international maritime regulatory authorities.
